I saw this picture from a set by my friends KMK Designs and it really struck something in me.
It’s so subtle and if you’ve read the Hunger Games books or saw the movie, you know what this symbolizes. I was really worried to read the books since the fandom appears to be full of racists and people who don’t actually know how to retain the bulk of what they read. When I finally read them they really got to me and I grew increasingly depressed. I was so down for days and I didn’t know why. After a deep conversation with a good friend, I realized it’s because I have pretty much spent my life trying to be Cinna. A person who has what could essentially be seen as a useless talent in a world full of vapid, shallow people who is using his talent to make a huge change in the world. Every step he made was to make the future better even at the detriment to his personal future and safety. I didn’t know if I was close to being him or if I’d just deluded myself into thinking I could be (metaphorically speaking).
I’ve always tried my best to do the same whether it’s through body positivity for my clients or activism for victims of human trafficking through events and projects that bring awareness to it. I am so lucky to know other designers, stylists and models who are just as aware of how self-involved and awful this industry can be and try their best to do some good through their ability to bring beauty to the masses. It may not seem like a lot, but it’s what we have and it’s what we can do.
So this picture, this beautiful, subtle picture, represents all of that for me. Thanks Kaitlyn and Sheridyn. I love you both and I’m glad you’re in my life.
